The north-eastern coast of Maui is home to the Hana Highway – one of the world’s greatest roadtrips. Cruise past lush forests, soaring mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Stop off for hikes up to hidden swimming holes, or for fresh street food from little fishing villages.
For more spectacular coastal scenery there’s the world’s tallest sea cliffs on the Moloka’i coast of the Kalaupapa Peninsula. Experience these unbelievable formations from a helicopter, a boat, or look-outs at Pelekunu Valley Overlook.
On the eastern side of Kilauea is the Thurston Lava Tube – a fascinating result of Hawaii’s past volcanic activity. It’s well presented for tourists – a short walk through lovely a forest leads to the well-lit Lava Tube.
For an anthropological experience attend a traditional Luau on Maui. This feast features hula dancing and traditional food and is a great introduction to the rich cultural history of Hawaii’s longest existing residents. A visit to Pearl Harbor is also a must for understanding an important part of Hawaii’s history.
