Visiting Krakow is a rollercoaster of emotions. Starting in the Old Town with it’s paved stone streets, gorgeous churches, and Europe’s largest market square, you’ll be delighted and charmed by just how lovely it is.

Then there’s Kazimierz – the former Jewish quarter, and the site of unspeakable atrocities from the 1930s and 40s. There are plenty of memorials and reminders of what happened here. For the most depressing yet compelling memorial of this time, make a day trip out to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp.

Lift your spirits back in town with a visit to Wawel Castle. This beautiful castle is perched atop a hill and doesn’t quite know what architectural style it wants to be. Legend has it that Krakow was formed after a dragon was defeated. Up at Wawel it seems almost believable.

The funky bar and club scene in Krakow is amazing – from Singer Bar where everyone dances on old sewing machine tables, to big boat parties on barges in the river, you’re in for a unique and entertaining night out.

A day trip out to Wieliczka Salt Mines will blow your mind. This underground labyrinth of still-working salt mines spread over 9 levels with over 300km worth of tunnels. 34 chambers are able to be explored by visitors. Monuments and sculptures adorn the rooms and EVERYTHING is made of salt. Most impressive is the cathedral – a fully functioning and gorgeous chapel with everything entirely carved from the natural salt.
