Zanzibar – it’s exactly as it’s name sounds: fun, frivolous, fantastical, far-off…

The Tanzanian island sits just off the East African coast and is fast becoming a tourist hot spot. The north end of the island is a haven of beach resorts, from the luxury to the low-end, with all of the associated restaurants, souvenir shops, and all-night-party places. That’s not to say it’s not an endless amount of fun!

Those looking for something a little more untouched will find plenty to their liking along the east side of the island, where fishing villages still dot the coast.

Divers and snorkelers will be spoilt for choice with the endless coral reefs to explore. Get up close and personal with the jungle residents – specifically the red Colobus monkey – in Jozani Forest. Or just spend your time exploring beach after perfect beach and watch the local dolphins glide by.

Zanzibar has a fascinating history, and beautiful relics of it can be seen all over the island. Stone Town is the heart and soul of Zanzibar Town, with it’s old cobbled streets and Arabic architechture. Beit el-Ajaib and Mtoni Palaces, as well as the Old Fort are fascinating well-preserved buildings that tell stories of Zanzibar’s past. The Kidichi Persian baths are also well worth a visit to see how the royal Persians spent their time.
