New Orleans – or ‘Norlans’ if you’re saying it in a local accent – is one of those places that captivates you from the moment you arrive. It’s an immersive experience – you can’t escape the rhythm, the pace, the colours, the sights, the flavours. Sure, it’s in America. In the South, no less. But make no mistake – NoLa – is it’s own world.

Influenced by French, Spanish, Cajun and Creole settlers and colonists, and a very colourful past, New Orleans has a very distinct and unique culture, language and cuisine. Try a “po’boy” sandwich, and the famous sweet treat ‘bignet’.

The French Quarter is the stunning historical district that is everything you imagine when you think of New Orleans. Wander the streets here, visit the hedonistic party street of Bourbon Street, then retreat to the lesser-known Frenchman’s Street for the best live jazz. Take a carriage ride to hear some salacious tales of the district’s past.

Voodoo culture is big in NoLa, and no visit is complete without at least one stop at a cemetery. The best and most famous is Louis II Cemetery in the French Quarter.

Another can’t-miss is the Garden District, where huge plantation houses stand proud on their lush green properties. Take a tour around here to learn more about society and culture of the Plantation Era.
